Smoked Salmon Dip Recipe


I love smoked salmon, but my check book is not quite so fond of it. When I splurge on it, I like to enjoy it in all its unadulterated glory. However, I do love a good salmon dip, but the pre-made stuff in the tub just doesn’t do it for me. (I’m moving away from all those weird ingredients in my older and wiser years. 🙂 ) It’s quite easy to make your own with common pantry items. Liquid smoke is the cheat lends that smoky flavor here, but you can easily omit it. You’ll find this homemade version has a much brighter flavor than the store-bought stuff. I like to serve it with pretzel chips, but feel free to use your favorite crackers or veggies. If you’re having a crowd over, you will want to double this recipe. It’s an appetizer that goes fast!

Smoked Salmon Dip Recipe

8 ounces (1 large block) cream cheese, at room temperature
2 Tablespoons ranch dressing
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon liquid smoke or to taste, optional
1/2 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning (or equivalent seafood seasoning mix)
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
2 generous dashes of hot sauce, or to taste
Salt to taste
1 can (6 ounces) sockeye salmon, drained (preferably wild-caught salmon – I use Wild Planet brand)
2 green onions (scallions), sliced thin, green tops included
Lemon wedge and sliced green onions for garnish, optional
Assorted chips and/or crudites for dipping

Place cream cheese, ranch dressing, lemon juice, liquid smoke, Old Bay seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, hot sauce, and salt to taste in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse until smooth.

Add salmon and sliced green onions. Pulse just until combined. Spoon into a serving dish. Chill 2 hours, or overnight for flavors to meld.

Garnish with lemon wedge and sliced green onions. Serve with your favorite pretzel chips, baguette slices, and/or vegetable crudites.

Yield: About 2 cups

• Canned tuna also works well as a salmon substitute.

• Chopped chives may be substituted for the green onions.

• This also makes a great stuffing for hard-boiled eggs or to use as a sandwich spread.
